Customs & Culture

A culture shaped by Buddhism, monarchy and the smile

Known as the "Land of Smiles," Thailand places great value on gentle, courteous social conduct — rooted in devout Buddhist faith and deep respect for the monarchy. Showing respect for these values is the first step toward a smooth, enjoyable trip.

Essential etiquette

Six customs every visitor should know

マナーEtiquette

The Wai Greeting

Pressing the palms together at chest height is the traditional Thai greeting — hand height varies with the recipient's age or status.

マナーEtiquette

Never touch someone's head

The head is considered sacred in Thai culture — even touching a child's head casually is considered impolite.

マナーEtiquette

Don't point your feet at people or Buddha images

Feet are considered the lowest, unclean part of the body — avoid pointing them at people or Buddha statues, or stepping over someone.

マナーEtiquette

Dress modestly at temples

Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering temple buildings.

マナーEtiquette

Respect for the monarchy

Respect for the King and royal family is enshrined in law — even banknotes, which bear royal portraits, should be handled with care.

マナーEtiquette

Keep your composure

Thai culture values calm and the spirit of 'mai pen rai' (never mind) — raised voices and public confrontation are strongly frowned upon.

Festivals & traditions

Notable festivals

Songkran (Thai New Year Water Festival)

Held around April 13–15, this nationwide water festival celebrates the New Year — the splashing symbolizes washing away the past year's misfortune.

Loy Krathong

On the full moon of the 12th lunar month, people float lotus-shaped krathong on rivers to give thanks to the water spirits — a beautifully atmospheric tradition.

"Mai pen rai" — roughly "no worries" — captures the spirit of Thai society. Adopting that same easygoing attitude toward small travel hiccups will make your trip all the richer.
