基本の説明Overview
分詞とは、動詞が形容詞のような働きをする形のことです。名詞に「どんな〜か」を説明するときに使います。分詞には、動詞の ing 形の「現在分詞」と、-ed 形(不規則に変化するものもあります)の「過去分詞」の2種類があります。A participle is a verb form that works like an adjective, telling us what kind of thing a noun is. There are two kinds: the present participle (the verb's -ing form) and the past participle (the -ed form, which is irregular for some verbs).
どちらを使うかは、名詞と動詞の関係で決まります。名詞が動作をする側なら現在分詞(「〜している」)、名詞が動作を受ける側なら過去分詞(「〜された」)です。たとえば「眠っている赤ちゃん」は赤ちゃんが眠る側なので sleeping baby、「割れた窓」は窓が割られた側なので broken window になります。Which one to use depends on how the noun relates to the verb. If the noun does the action, use the present participle (“doing”); if the noun receives the action, use the past participle (“done to”). A baby sleeps, so it is a sleeping baby; a window is broken by something, so it is a broken window.
| 現在分詞Present participle | 過去分詞Past participle | |
|---|---|---|
| 形Form | 動詞 + ing(sleeping, running)verb + ing (sleeping, running) | -ed または不規則形(used, broken, written)-ed or an irregular form (used, broken, written) |
| 意味Meaning | 「〜している」(能動・進行)“doing” (active / ongoing) | 「〜された」(受け身)、「〜してしまった」(完了)“done to” (passive), “having done” (completed) |
| 例Example | a sleeping baby | a broken window |
分詞には、もうひとつ大切な使い方があります。感情を表す動詞(surprise「驚かせる」、interest「興味を持たせる」、excite「わくわくさせる」など)は、「感情を与えるもの」には ing 形、「感情を受ける人」には ed 形を使います。Participles have one more important use. With verbs of emotion (surprise, interest, excite…), use the -ing form for the thing that causes the feeling and the -ed form for the person who feels it.
| 動詞Verb | -ing(感情を与える)-ing (causes the feeling) | -ed(感情を受ける)-ed (feels it) |
|---|---|---|
| surprise | surprising(驚くような)surprising (amazing) | surprised(驚いた)surprised (feeling amazed) |
| interest | interesting(おもしろい)interesting (fun to learn about) | interested(興味がある)interested (curious) |
| excite | exciting(わくわくさせる)exciting (thrilling) | excited(わくわくした)excited (thrilled) |
| bore | boring(退屈な)boring (dull) | bored(退屈した)bored (fed up) |
さらに、分詞は補語としても使われます。see / hear などの知覚動詞や keep、have のあとに「名詞 + 分詞」を置くと、「〜が…しているのを見る」「〜を…されたままにする」のような意味になります。Participles also work as complements. After perception verbs such as see and hear, and after keep and have, a “noun + participle” gives meanings like “see someone doing” or “have something done”.
