基本の説明Overview
英語の名詞には、1つ、2つと数えられる名詞(可算名詞)と、数えられない名詞(不可算名詞)があります。dog や apple は数えられるので、1匹なら a dog、2匹なら two dogs のように、数によって形を変えます。water や milk のように決まった形がなく、ひとまとまりで考えるものは数えられない名詞で、a をつけたり -s をつけたりしません。English nouns are either countable or uncountable. A dog or an apple can be counted, so the form changes with the number: a dog, two dogs. Things like water or milk have no fixed shape and are thought of as a mass, so they never take a or -s.
数えられる名詞が1つのときは、名詞の前に a か an をつけます。どちらを使うかは、つづりではなく最初の「音」で決まります。母音(ア・イ・ウ・エ・オに近い音)で始まれば an(an apple, an egg)、それ以外は a(a dog, a book)です。hour は h を発音しないので an hour、university は最初の音が「ユー」で子音なので a university になります。When a countable noun means one thing, put a or an before it. The choice depends on the first sound, not the spelling. Use an before a vowel sound (an apple, an egg) and a before anything else (a dog, a book). Hour starts with a vowel sound because the h is silent, so it is an hour; university starts with a “yoo” sound, which counts as a consonant, so it is a university.
| 名詞の種類Type of noun | つける語・形Form to use | 例Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 数えられる・1つCountable, one | a / an + singular form | a dog, an apple, a university, an hour |
| 数えられる・2つ以上Countable, two or more | 複数形(-s / -es など)Plural form (-s / -es, etc.) | two dogs, three boxes, four children |
| 数えられないUncountable | a / an も -s もつけないNo a / an and no -s | water, milk, homework, music |
| 相手にも「どれか」わかるBoth people know which one | the + 名詞 | the dog, the dogs, the water |
複数形は、ふつう語尾に -s をつけます(dog → dogs)。s・x・ch・sh で終わる語には -es(box → boxes, watch → watches)、「子音字+y」で終わる語は y を i に変えて -ies(dictionary → dictionaries)をつけます。child → children, man → men のように、形が不規則に変わる語もあります。The plural usually adds -s (dog → dogs). Words ending in s, x, ch or sh take -es (box → boxes, watch → watches), and words ending in a consonant + y change y to i and add -es (dictionary → dictionaries). Some nouns are irregular: child → children, man → men.
the は「話し手も聞き手も、どれのことかわかっているもの」につけます。初めて話に出てくるときは a / an、2回目からは the を使うのが基本です。また、太陽や月のように世の中に1つしかないもの、楽器の名前(play the piano)、最上級(the tallest)にもふつう the がつきます。Use the when both the speaker and the listener know exactly which one is meant. A thing is usually introduced with a / an and then called the after that. The also goes with things there is only one of (the sun, the moon), with musical instruments (play the piano), and with superlatives (the tallest).
